Structural Geology of the Carboniferous Dublin Basin Field Trip
This fieldtrip will involve the examination of structures mainly contained within the calciturbidite sediments of the Loughshinny Formation which were deposited in the Lower Carboniferous Dublin Basin.
A broad range of structures, including folds, faults and veins, attributed to both Variscan deformation and earlier Lower Carboniferous rifting are exposed along a 1km length of coastline either side of Loughshinny harbour. The area contains textbook-quality examples of chevron folds displaying the full range of associated features, including non-cylindrical and parasitic folding, together with complex arrays of associated calcite veins. Further to the north, adjacent to the margin of the Dublin Basin, an early normal fault, referred to locally as the Copper Mine fault, highlights the highly mineralised nature of Lower Carboniferous normal faults.
On this fieldtrip we will consider the structural processes associated with deformation of the Loughshinny rocks and will investigate how the associated structures relate to the regional tectonics of the Carboniferous.
